The Tenure track position will join the VU Department of Environmental and Health of the Faculty of Science. The successful candidate will have a responsibility to develop and implement innovative research related to microplastics in the environment. This will include method development for the analysis of microplastics in various matrices, research on the fate of microplastics in the environment, on the possible presence of microplastics in human and on additives in microplastics. The tenure track candidate is supposed to develop her/his own research line through acquisition of external projects. It is expected that the tenure track candidate will actively write proposals to national and international organizations such as the European Union and participate in consortia working in this field. In addition to research, the successful candidate will be teaching or develop courses on microplastics and related topics at Bachelor and Master levels within the field of environmental chemistry as well as supervising Master and Bachelor theses. The research focus of the successful candidate should be complimentary to existing expertise in the department. Teamwork is considered essential. The successful candidate should have excellent empirical and analytical skills. The candidate should show academic leadership, maintain a high publication output, and raise competitive research funding.

Your duties
  • acquire external funding for research
  • co-supervise PhD students
  • supervise Bsc and Msc students
  • teach Bsc and Msc courses and develop courses
  • perform research and publish results in leading international journals
  • organisational tasks

  • the candidate must have an academic standing, showing internationally competitive research, a publication record, and/or have an internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact
  • the candidate must have a PhD in analytical or environmental chemistry or a related field
  • we expect the candidate to obtain funds
  • the ideal candidate should have an international network of collaborating scientists from across Europe and globally
  • for the teaching, she/he should preferably have field teaching experience, and know how to setup and supervise BSc and MSc student research projects
  • the ideal candidate should preferably have a basic qualification in teaching for Dutch universities (BKO), or is willing to follow this course after appointment

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €4,406 (scale 12) and a maximum €5,656 (scale 12), depending on your experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system.

We offer a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, initially for the duration of 6 years. Within an agreed period, tenure could be achieved if the faculty criteria are fulfilled. During the tenure, the performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, and acquisition of prestigious personal grants or equivalent project funding. After a successful evaluation, permanent employment will be granted in the position of Associate Professor.

About the department, institute, project
The department of Environment & Health aims to understand and inform society on the environmental and human health risks of chemicals. The department is a unique combination of chemists, toxicologists and epidemiologists. We develop methods to discover emerging chemicals and focus our research to characterize their toxicity for the environment, including humans.
